Brand Spotlight: Buck Mason’s Quiet Rise to the Top

Buck Mason isn’t chasing hype and that’s exactly why it might be America’s next great menswear label.

The LA-founded brand just opened its 51st store, a new two-story flagship in New York’s SoHo. Its appeal? Subtle, high-quality staples with heavyweight tees, cotton blazers, and refined chinos all priced with surprising restraint. Co-founders Sasha Koehn and Erik Allen Ford say they take an intuitive approach to pricing: they pick a number that "feels right" and work backwards to make the quality fit.

What started as a frustrated pivot from low-quality subscription boxes in 2013 has grown into a $100M+ business. Their approach speaks equally to guys who think hard about what they wear and guys who don’t.

Crucially, Buck Mason isn’t just chasing coastal cool. About one-third of its production is US-made, and stores are opening across middle America, all part of a deliberate strategy to build a lasting, accessible American label.

We Must End the Scourge of Tech Pants

In a blistering piece for GQ, writer Max Berlinger makes a forceful case for why tech pants - those synthetic, stretch-laden, moisture-wicking imposters - should be banished from modern menswear.

Over the last few years, in otherwise unassuming locales all across this nation—boardrooms and fast-casual eateries, airport lounges and sports-bar patios—a sinister force has emerged. They’re a genus of tapered 5-pocket trousers designed to look like your run-of-the-mill khakis or chinos, but are actually made from a synthetic performance material—the kind designed for use in a yoga class, with four-way stretch and moisture wicking properties. Post-pandemic, these tech pants have become the de facto bottoms of a certain cross section of young, upwardly-mobile urban professionals. (On a recent commute, one GQ editor clocked five near-identical pairs of light-gray tech pants on a single subway car.) They’re the new fleece vest, Allbirds for your legs, a symbol of middle-class corporate homogeneity.

Allow me to make my feelings about tech pants crystal clear: Fuck ’em.
