Kendrick, Pharrell, Rocky: Why Is Every Stylish Rapper Wearing the Same Designer?
This week Highsnobiety's Jake Silbert dived into how ERL's vibrant and nostalgic designs have become a go-to for musicians seeking to make bold, playful statements both on and off the stage:
When Kendrick Lamar shock-dropped new album GNX on November 25, it spurred approximately ten billion conversations. I mean what isn't there to talk about!?
The car, the music video, the timing, the lyrics, the... uh, belt?Shop ERL
Yes, look at the GNX album cover, at Lamar's seemingly unassuming outfit. There, quietly positioned towards the lower right side of the frame, is a throughline connecting Lamar to A$AP Rocky, Kid Cudi, Pharrell, and even, er, North West.
All of these famous rappers are inexplicably drawn to ERL, the red-hot indie sleaze-ish clothing label founded and overseen by Eli Russell Linnetz. It's interesting because, sure, Rocky, Pharrell, and Cudi cosigns kinda make sense. They're plugged-in guys whom you expect to see in of-the-moment outfits from buzzy designers. But Kendrick Lamar?

A Classic Boot Reinvented for Modern Adventures
The Viberg Black Wooly CXL Service Boot is an updated version of the original work boot designed in 1931 by Edwin Viberg himself. The design is inspired by standard-issue military boots used in World War II. This limited-edition boot features Black Wooly Chromexcel leather produced by Horween, a specialized variation of the classic Chromexcel leather, developed using a nearly century-old tanning recipe. The tannage incorporates lanolin as the primary oil, giving the leather a naturally waxy finish that enhances its weather resistance, durability, and flexibility. Known for its pull-up characteristics, the leather is drum dyed to maintain a consistent black color while developing a subtle patina over time.
Built on Viberg's classic 2030 Last, which combines a military-inspired profile with a refined fit, the boot includes a brogue cap toe, gun-black eyelets, and an antiqued leather midsole. The sole is a British-made Goodyear Commando, providing reliable lug traction for outdoor wear. The stitchdown construction, a hallmark of Viberg craftsmanship, ensures long-lasting durability and easy resoling when needed. Assembled by skilled craftspeople in Viberg’s workshop in Vancouver, this Service Boot is designed for versatility, combining rugged performance with understated design.

Universal Works Finds Joy in Happy Accidents
Universal Works, a brand deeply rooted in blending heritage craftsmanship with contemporary sensibilities, has made its mark by celebrating the beauty of imperfection and the stories behind clothes. Founded in 2009 by David Keyte, the brand draws inspiration from his upbringing in a working-class family in the Midlands and his early career in menswear. With a mission to create clothing that’s honest, unpretentious, and wearable, Universal Works combines traditional workwear aesthetics with a modern twist, always with an eye toward sustainability and quality.
Their latest collection, AW24-II: Happy Accidents, embodies this philosophy to its core. The collection is a tribute to unexpected outcomes—moments when unplanned details lead to something unique and extraordinary. It’s a joyful reminder that in design, as in life, not everything goes according to plan, but those deviations often yield the best results.
The pieces in this collection feature relaxed tailoring, bold textures, and earthy tones that feel both contemporary and timeless. From oversized corduroy jackets to intricate knitwear and patchwork details, the collection balances utility and artistry. Universal Works uses traditional techniques to craft garments that feel lived-in yet fresh, making them equally suited for the office or a weekend in the countryside.
